about

This Dark Horizon was inspired by the documentary 'GABBERS!' by Wim van der Aar and 'Hard voor de hal' by René van Zundert. The documentary shows the impact of hardcore / gabber music in the early / mid 90's in the Netherlands.

As a 9 year old kid growing up close to Rotterdam (probably gabbers main capitol around 1995 in the Netherlands) I was completely blown away and fascinated by how extremely heavy, fast, energetic and how dark this music was. Way too young to attend a real rave I collected cd's, posters and all kinds of stuff associated with the hardcore scene over the next two years.

At a certain point gabber was so popular in Holland there was a weekly show called Hakkuh on national television, which featured new videos, live shows and interviews with DJ's, producers and MC's. A commercial and economic peak for gabber came in 1996 and, compared to what happened after punk ermerged in 1977, it vanished from the mainstream not even two years later. Despite media declaring gabber dead, it's still alive as a subculture in the Netherlands and in many different parts in the world today.

I never listen to gabber any more these days. I sold all my cd's and stuff when I was 11 years old and my musical interested started changing to rock and 'alternative'. But it's fun looking back at that huge and strange momentum in time, especially in such a small country. Much used phrases used by gabbers include "Hardcore will never die" and "Gabber for life" which sounded really funny to me under a mellow seventies inspired rock song.

Enjoy!

lyrics

Put your tracksuit on
It's gonna be a long, long, long, long night
We're gonna pound until the morning light reveals itself
On this dark horizon
This dark horizon

Yeah, get your clippers out
Get bigger, bolder, better
I've got something in my pocket
Gonna make you feel good, good, good

Hey man, listen up, I tell ya
This is gonna last forever
Hardcore never dies
You, me and ten thousand others
Just like us

There's a prophet on this stage, so we must the chosen few
And don't ask me why, but each girl's got a Tweety tattoo
You've got untrained ear so you say to me it all just sounds like "boomboomboom"
All night long

Don't tell me nothing
I know who I am
Hardcore to the bone
You, me and those ten thousand others
Just like us

Hey man, listen up, I tell ya - this is gonna last forever
Hardcore never dies
Hardcore never dies
Hardcore never dies
